HANS
JÜRGEN
OSCAR
The rain protection is made from a compostable PLA blend (polylactide, mixed with other biodegradable materials).
This rain poncho is ideal for numerous applications: e.g., at festivals, open-air concerts, sporting events, or as emergency rain protection in various situations. The rain protection made from PLA places special emphasis on sustainability and environmental friendliness.
The rain poncho has a one-size-fits-all measurement of approximately 127 x 100 cm (Model Oscar: 101x76cm) and is made from a biodegradable PLA blend. Rain protection made from PLA weighs approximately 60 g (Model Oscar: 42g) and is packaged in a compostable bag (approx. 10 x 16.5 cm). The bag contains an insert made from recycled paper, showing information on safety, material, disposal, and distributor/contact details. Optionally, the rain poncho rain protection made from PLA can also be packaged in a band made from recycled paper, which also lists the aforementioned product information.
The rain protection made from PLA is usually repackaged in units of 200 pieces per carton (40 x 29 x 25 cm, 13 kg Model Oscar: 40 x 29 x 25 cm, 10 kg ) repackaged. All materials used are either compostable or made from recycled material.
Compostability:
The rain poncho is made from a PLA blend that is industrially compostable. For optimal composting results, the poncho should be disposed of in appropriate facilities.
Safety Assessment
The PLA material is flammable, but with a higher ignition temperature than conventional plastics. PLA and similar bioplastics are not suitable for contact with open flames.
Hazard Analysis:
- Flammability: PLA material can melt or catch fire near flames or heat.
- Choking hazard: Children might misuse the poncho and inhale the material.
- Lack of compostability due to improper disposal: PLA requires industrial composting conditions (temperatures of 50–70 °C) and does not fully decompose in home composting facilities.
1. Probability of Occurrence
Hazard | Description | Probability |
Flammability | The poncho can melt or burn near open flames or heat. | Low (PLA has a higher ignition temperature than PE). |
Choking hazard | Children might misuse the poncho and inhale the material. | Low (with clear labeling and adult supervision). |
Lack of compostability | Improper disposal could lead to the material not decomposing. | Medium (due to lack of consumer education). |
2. Severity of Potential Damage
Hazard | Description of Potential Damage | Severity |
Flammability | First to second-degree burns, potential life-threatening situations in extreme cases. | Medium |
Choking hazard | Respiratory arrest in small children if the poncho blocks the airways. | High (for children). |
Lack of compostability | Environmental impact due to insufficient decomposition in nature. | Medium |
3. Protective Measures
Hazard | Protective Measures |
Flammability | Warning: “Keep away from open fire.” |
Choking Hazard | Warning: “Not suitable for children under 3 years. Children should use only under adult supervision.” |
Lack of compostability | Education: Information on industrial composting conditions. Symbols for correct disposal. |
